Volunteer Opportunities

 

At Proctor Hospital, volunteers play a vital role in the day-to-day operations and the delivery of quality care and services. We believe that volunteerism not only adds to the quality of one’s life but also gives individuals the opportunity to share their knowledge and life experience with others. The commitment made each day by our volunteers adds greatly to the excellence in care and the commitment to quality of the entire organization.

Service Auxiliary – The Service Auxiliary is a distinguished organization with a history and tradition of service and philanthropy dating back to 1888. Today the Service Auxiliary members volunteer in Snacks ‘n Sodas, ICU and Surgical Waiting Areas, Mail and Flower Delivery, Patient Library and the Hospital Gift Shop. Most shifts are four hours and scheduled Monday thru Friday with the exception of the Gift Shop. The Gift Shop is open seven days a week. The Service Auxiliary offers a variety of activities and socials throughout the year including annual Christmas and Spring Luncheons, coffees, and unique and fun fund-raising opportunities. Each year the Service Auxiliary makes a contribution to the hospital for special projects and provides scholarship awards for hospital employee applicants continuing their education in the medical field.

Medical Escorts – This coed group, (mostly men) assist with transporting patients, make vital deliveries throughout the hospital, and enjoy the companionship of fellow Escorts. Hours are 8:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. and 12:15 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Outpatient Surgical Waiting Desk – Evening Volunteer - Outpatient Surgical Waiting Desk volunteers act as liaisons between surgical staff and families; help maintain the environment of the waiting area; maintain beverages; and assist with patient discharge. If you have a passion for working with people, enjoy managing your environment, are sensitive to patient/family needs, are a detailed communicator, and appreciate the importance of excellent customer service, this opportunity is for you! Must be compassionate, caring, and dependable. Hours are 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Ambassador Plus (front lobby) - Opportunity for individuals who have high-quality interpersonal skills to act as an advocate and liaison for patients and visitors at their time of arrival to the hospital. Volunteers must be able to greet guests in a prompt, caring, and courteous manner; give directions; direct guests to appropriate personnel for additional assistance, if necessary; and offer assistance as needed (push wheelchairs and/or take to appropriate department). Hours are 6 - 9 a.m.; 8 - 11 a.m.; 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.; and 2 - 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Emergency Department Greeter – Volunteers greet patients in waiting room after they have been registered by staff; keep families in waiting area informed (with information from staff); keep waiting area neat; and make sure patients feel they are not forgotten. The volunteer will make “comfort rounds” on the patients in the Emergency Department every half hour to check on their needs (e.g., warm blanket, reading material, etc.). Hours are 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. (4 hour shift) 7 days per week.

Patient Representative – Volunteers serve as a liaison between recently admitted patients and hospital staff. Patient Representatives make rounds on newly admitted patients to welcome them and inquire about their admission experience and how their stay has been. Patient Representatives report patient feedback and any concerns raised to appropriate hospital staff for follow up.

Patient Services - Nursing Units - Volunteers visit with patients and check their needs (e.g., refill water pitcher, clear table for meal tray, provide opportunities for social interaction). Help Department run errands, restock supplies, and assist with assembling chart packets, as needed. Hours are 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. (4 hour shift) 7 days per week.

Courtesy Shuttle Driver – The volunteer Courtesy Shuttle Driver is responsible for operating the Courtesy Shuttle golf cart in the parking areas and transporting guests to and/or from the hospital in a friendly, efficient and courteous manner. Shuttle drivers acknowledge and greet guests in a friendly manner and provide elbow-arm assistance to passengers as needed. This volunteer position requires a valid Illinois drivers license, a minimum of 3 years driving experience with a safe driving record and the ability to drive in inclement weather.

Bulk Mailing & Special Project Helpers – Volunteers are needed occasionally to assist various departments (Proctor Health Care Foundation and Human Resources) with bulk mailings and special projects. Volunteers would be on-call, as needed.
