Director of Pharmacy Named at Proctor
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce that Jason Ronald Harlow of Peoria has been named Pharmacy Director. Harlow received his PharmD, pharmacy doctorate, from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy. Prior to accepting this position Harlow was employed by OSF as a home infusion pharmacy manager. CEO Announces Retirement After 43 Years of Service
Norm LaConte, President and Chief Executive Officer of Proctor Hospital has announced his plan to retire after almost 43 years of service to the Hospital. No exact date has been established. In accordance with the Hospital’s Succession Plan, the Board of Trustees has appointed a Search Committee and is retaining a national executive search firm to recruit Mr. LaConte’s successor.
During Mr. LaConte’s tenure as the leader of Proctor, the Hospital has grown and become a very significant healthcare institution offering the latest technology supported by a comprehensive medical staff of over 500 physicians. He initiated a wide range of Proctor services to the community including open heart surgery, peripheral vascular services, wound care clinic, chest pain center, skilled nursing center, five First Care urgent care facilities, innovative diagnostic and interventional cardiology programs, Peoria’s first and only all private room hospital and the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery, the nation’s leading multiple addiction treatment program with facilities in Peoria, Bloomington, and Springfield. Many of these programs were the first in our community and remain unique to Proctor. He directed the development of Proctor through more than a dozen expansion projects and the growth of Proctor’s campus to more than 60 acres including the Proctor Medical Park.
Jim Sullivan, Chairman of the Proctor Board of Trustees stated “With Norm’s leadership, Proctor has grown and prospered by providing the highest quality healthcare services using the latest technology and the areas finest physicians and patient care staff. He has been the inspiration for Proctor’s success. During the last several years, Proctor has achieved some of its best financial performance and has received upgrades in its Bond Ratings and financial outlook. The Hospital is well positioned for the future.”
Mr. LaConte began his career at Proctor as the Controller and Chief Financial Officer in 1965. He was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer in 1979.
He commented, “It has been an honor to be part of the exciting development of Proctor into the hospital of choice for many in our community. As we celebrate 125 years of service, our Board has adopted a visionary strategic plan which will insure Proctor’s future as an important part of our healthcare community.” 2/27/08

Proctor Hospital Announces Young Farmer of the Year Award Winner
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce that Justin Moffit of Gilson, IL has been named the Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year for 2007.
Moffit was the Knox County Young Farmer winner for 2007. That honor automatically entered him into consideration for the overall Young Farmer of the Year award along with nominees from eight other counties.
He is the current Chairman for the Knox County Farm Bureau Young Farmers and has been active in Bureau activities for the past nine years. Moffit earned his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Mechanization from the University of Illinois. Since that time he has also earned an additional associates degree in fire science and his EMT (emergency medical technician) license. Outside of farming, he is a volunteer firefighter for Knoxville, IL, and a full-time firefighter in Galesburg as well as a member of the Peoria Air National Guard.
Safety has always been a priority for Moffit who has worked tirelessly to incorporate and promote safety into every aspect of his life and careers in farming, firefighting and the Guard.
Moffit works a small grain farm just outside Knoxville and is the Past-President for the FFA Chapter in Knoxville and a former Knox County Federation Board President.
“Justin, and all of our County award winners are perfect examples of the excellent young leaders we’ve found working in our farming communities. They are not only passionate about farming, they are passionate about their families and about their communities,” said Linda Beckman, Vice President of Proctor Hospital. “And they use this passion to give back to their communities, to educate others, and to promote those all-important health and safety issues that are specific to farming. I couldn’t be more impressed although I know the people that know Justin and the other individual County winners are not surprised.”
Moffit has generously contributed all monetary winnings associated with the award back to the Knox County Young Farmers program
Proctor’s Outstanding Young Farmer Award is presented in Bureau, Fulton, Henry, Knox, Marshall-Putnam, Peoria, Stark, Tazewell and Woodford counties. County award winners then go on to a selection process whereby one of these nine individuals is selected as the Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year.
Proctor Hospital established the Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year program in 2007 to recognize outstanding young farmers that are proven leaders within the agri-community and demonstrate a commitment to agricultural health and safety issues.

Proctor Hospital Sleep Disorders Center Re-Accredited
The Sleep Disorders Center at Proctor Hospital in Peoria was recently re-accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).
“The AASM congratulates The Sleep Disorders Center at Proctor Hospital on once again fulfilling the high standards required for receiving program accreditation,” said Alejandro Chediak, MD, AASM President. “The facility is a significant resource to the local medical community and will continue to provide academic and scientific value in addition to the highest quality care for patients suffering from sleep disorders.”
To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center’s facility, staff and evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves; the Center is directed by Patrick E. Whitten, MD.
AASM is a professional medical society for clinicians, researchers, and other health care providers in the field of sleep medicine. As the national accrediting body for sleep disorders centers and labs, the AASM is dedicated to setting standards and promoting excellence in sleep medicine heath care, education and research.

Proctor Counseling Center Presents “Learning Anger Management”
Temper got the best of you? Instead of "blowing up" or doing a "slow burn," learn to handle your anger effectively. On Wednesday, January 16 from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm, Pamela R. Shuck-Hoehne, MA, NCC, LCPC, RDDP, of the Counseling Center at Proctor Hospital, will discuss anger and what we all can do to learn to manage our anger more effectively. This class serves as an introduction to the subject and a prelude to Center’s highly successful anger support group.

Anger Management Group begiuns in January
The Counseling Center at Proctor Hospital has recently created an Anger Management Group. Co-facilitators, Pamela Shuck-Hoehne, MA, NCC, LCPC, and Kellie E. Branch-Dircks, LCSW, therapists and co-facilitators.
Participants of the eight-week course will meet Tuesday evenings from 6:30 until 8:00 pm, beginning January 22 at the Counseling Center located at 5409 N. Knoxville Ave., on the campus of Proctor Hospital.
Cost for the total 8-week class - paid in advance is $250.00 per person. Total 8-week class - paid the evening of each session $35.00 per session ($280.00 total). A certificate of attendance will be issued after attending all sessions.
Participants will understand angry emotions and take responsibility for one’s behavior; learn to assess cognitive, behavioral and environmental triggers; improve coping skills in the management of anger including assertive communication, relaxation methods, and cognitive behavioral techniques; and practice anger management skills in an interactive group setting.

Proctor Hospital and Peoria County Farm Bureau Announce Award Winner
Peoria County farmer Jim Rumbold has won Proctor Hospital’s Outstanding Young Farmer Award for Peoria County. Rumbold received the award at the 95th annual meeting of the Peoria County Farm Bureau on November 17.
Rumbold is the Chairman of the Young Leaders Committee of the Bureau, and has been instrumental in FFA educational programs. He farms corn, soybeans and wheat with his father and brother and lives with his wife and two children in rural Chillicothe.
Nominees for the Award must be between the ages of 18 and 35 and a proven leader within the agriculture community and demonstrate a commitment to agricultural health and safety issues.

Mammogram-A-Thon at Proctor Hospital
The Eight Annual Mammogram-A-Thon will be held at Proctor Hospital on Friday, October 19. Appointments are available from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Participants will be eligible to win many door prizes. Refreshments will be served.
Eligible women will receive a free mammogram. Qualifications for the free mammogram are: you must be at least 35 or older; either do not have insurance or insurance does not cover mammograms; not on Medicare or Medicaid; and meets income-range specifications. Women age 40 and older should have mammograms every 1 to 2 years. Age is the most important risk factor for breast cancer. The older a woman is, the greater her chance of developing breast cancer.

Introducing Recovery Walks! 2007
The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital and the Proctor Health Care Foundation are pleased to introduce Recovery Walks! 2007: One Step at a Time.
Proceeds from Recovery Walks! 2007: One Step at a Time will assist in establishing the Ameel Rashid Scholarship for treatment of individuals and families affected by addiction.
“The Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital is a highly effective and respected program. Our goal is to treat those people who suffer from addictive diseases. It saddens me when clients don’t have sufficient funds or insurance to cover the cost of treatment. Our goal is to use these scholarship funds so that qualified patients can benefit from our program and start on the road to recovery,” said Ameel G. Rashid, M.D., Co-medical director.
The event takes place on Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The Walk steps-off at 12:00 p.m. at the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital located on the Hospital campus at 5409 N. Knoxville Ave., Peoria.
"The Walk promises to be a significant event,” said Rick Zehr, Vice President for Addiction and Behavioral Services at Proctor. “Not only will it be a rare public celebration of lives changed through recovery but the world's first Walk to recognize those in recovery from ALL addictions, not just alcohol and drugs."
Registration is $15 per person, $10 (12 & under), and $40 for a family. Participants may choose between the 5K (3.1 miles) and the one-mile walk. All participants receive Walk
T-shirts. Interested individuals are encouraged to create Recovery Walks! teams for fun, fellowship and a little healthy competition.
The Honor Guard will consist of people who consider themselves in recovery, and will be recognized as living proof of sustained recovery. We will celebrate recovery by recognizing an individual's years of recovery (0-9 years, 10-19 years, 20-29 years, 30 + years) by the color of his/her t-shirt. If you want to be recognized, please identify your years of recovery on the registration form.

IIAR Receives National Marketing Award
The Illinois Institute for Addiction recovery at Proctor Hospital has won a Bronze Award from Healthcare Marketing Report Magazine, a national marketing trade publication. The award is for IIAR’s Don’t Gamble Away Our Future program that includes collateral materials and an interactive DVD. Presentations have been made to over 16,000 students in over 50 primary, middle and high schools throughout central Illinois. Don’t Gamble Away Our Future is an educational program that introduces adolescents and teens to the hazards of all forms of gambling.
Learn & Tell 7 - Women's Breast & Health Awareness Fair
Proctor Hospital in collaboration with Susan G. Komen for the Cure are pleased to present Learn & Tell 7, an initiative that encourages participants to learn about
women's health and tell seven of their friends what they learned.
The Fair will be held Wednesday, July 25, 2007 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at the

The Proctor Cycling Classic is family –friendly.
The Twentieth Annual Proctor Cycling Classic begins with time trials (prologue) Friday, June 29 in Chillicothe, Illinois at 6:00 p.m. The last rider for the evening will start at 7:45 p.m. The distance will be 3.7 miles and medals will be awarded.
On Saturday, June 30 the Illinois State Road Race Championship begins at 8:30 a.m. in Brimfield, Illinois at Brimfield High School. The Road Race features the King-of-the-Hill competition. The Men’s Pro I/II event starts at 1:30 p.m. Over $5,000 in cash and prizes will be on the line.
Sunday, July 1 downtown Peoria, Illinois it’s the amazing Illinois State Criterium Championship with events beginning at 8:00 a.m., Fulton and Jefferson streets. The Women’s Category IV (beginners) will start things off at 8:00 a.m. and the “race of the day,” the Men’s Pro I/II, begins at 1:20 p.m. Over $7,500 in cash and prizes will be awarded.
Again this year the Classic Kid’s races will begin at Noon during the Criterium (Sunday, July 1). There will be racing events for children three and under (Big Wheel races), as well as children age four, five and six, and a seven, eight and nine category. Races will be held on the Peoria Civic Center frontage road and Criterium course. Eminian Named 2007 Nurse of the Year
Proctor Hospital has named Deb Eminian, RN, it’s “Nurse of the Year” for 2007.
The Donna Jean Pauli Nurse of the Year Award is given annually to the nurse that most exemplifies those high standards of quality nursing care that were the hallmark of Proctor nurse Donna Jean Pauli; leadership, dedication, and passion.
“As a nurse, we all put patient care and safety as our top priority, and we have so many deserving nurses at Proctor,” said Eminian. “It was a great surprise and honor, especially having worked with Donna Jean Pauli. Donna was one of those nurses that you wanted to be like as you grow and develop as a nurse. I only hope to someday be half the nurse that she was. “
Eminian is Nurse Manager for the Ortho/Neuro Department and has been employed by Proctor since 1990. She lives with husband Dave and their four children - Emily, Jacob, Nick and Kelcie, in Hanna City, IL.
Proctor Announces Scholarship Recipients
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce its annual Marcy Andrew Flashing Memorial Scholarship Award winners for 2007 are Jeanette Lynn Newnum of Pekin, IL, and Kamdyn A. Philbee of Peoria.
Newnum, currently a certified pharmacy technician, is pursuing a dual major of nutritional science and nursing. Philbee is a unit secretary and certified nursing assistant. Proctor employs both.
The scholarships are given annually during National Nurses’ Week to deserving individuals who are pursuing nursing careers. The Scholarships honor the memory of Marcy Andrew Flashing, RN.
Gift and Service Auxiliary Officers Announced at Spring Luncheon
Proctor Health Care Foundation is pleased to announce it has received a gift from the Proctor Hospital Service Auxiliary for $88,103.46. Auxiliary President Betty Leach made the contribution to Hospital Executive Vice President Garrett McGowan at the Auxiliary’s Spring Luncheon.
The Service Auxiliary also announced their officers for 2007-2008: (L to R) Kathy Abbott, Vice President; Jerrene Elliot, President-Elect; Betty Leach, President; Shirley Fuchs, Secretary; and Shirley Presnell, Treasurer.
The Service Auxiliary operates the Hospital Gift Shop, Snack Shop, and holds various sales and shows throughout the year for fundraising.
Service Auxiliary Announces Health Scholarship Winners
Four Proctor Hospital employees were recent recipients of the 2007 Proctor Hospital Service Auxiliary Scholarships.
Rebecca Curless, CNA (Peoria), Trudy Holmes, Support Services (Wyoming, IL), Amanda Kieser, Exercise Specialist (Wyoming, IL), and Jamisin Maxwell, Medical Records (Peoria), will receive scholarships to assist in their continued education in the health/nursing fields.
The Auxiliary presents the scholarships annually during National Hospital Week.
Proctor Surgical Team Receives National Recognition
On March 22, 2007, Proctor Hospital was honored with the SCIP6 Commitment to Quality Award. The award was presented jointly by David Hunt, MD, FACS, Medical Officer, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Dale Bratzler, DO, MPH, Principal Clinical Coordinator, Oklahoma Foundation for Medical Quality on behalf of the Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) leading SCIP6, an interstate collaborative consisting of hospitals and QIOs from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a national quality partnership of organizations focused on improving surgical care by significantly reducing surgical complications. The focus of SCIP6 is to support the national SCIP project by accelerating improvements in surgical care through a forum of learning, sharing information, and promoting best practices and system improvements on a local and regional level.
Proctor has committed time, resources and efforts to the SCIP6 collaborative. “We are pleased to honor Proctor Hospital with the SCIP6 Commitment to Quality Award. With hospitals and health care providers from different states in close communication, we can develop processes to reduce the rate of surgical complications,” said Mari Baran R.N., QI Consultant and SCIP Project Lead, from the Illinois Foundation for Quality Health Care, the QIO for the state of Illinois.

Hospital Announces Appointment to Executive Management Team
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Linda S. Beckman as Vice-President of Business Development effective April 2, 2007.
Beckman has over 20 years marketing and business development experience of which 15 years have been in healthcare marketing and sales.
She was most recently the Director of Sales and Regional Development for Methodist Medical Center of Illinois (2002-2007) where she was responsible for preferred provider contracting, customer relationship management and partnerships with self-funded employers.
She was Director of Client Development for the Proctor Health Care Corporation (2000-2002), Director of Marketing and Sales for Proctor First Care (1993-2000) and an Employer Services Representative with the Hospital (1991-1993).
Beckman was the Associate Executive Director for the YWCA of Peoria from 1989-1991 and Development Director for The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters in Peoria from 1986-1989.
She is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Springfield and a member of Peoria North Rotary and a volunteer for the Peoria Public Schools Educational Foundation and Kingman Primary School.
Linda resides in Dunlap.
Open House Scheduled for Nursing Graduates
The Tuesday, March 27 open house will be held from 2:00-5:00 p.m. in Classroom I of the Proctor Professional Building adjacent the Hospital. The Patient Services Department at Proctor extends an invitation to all May nursing grads to meet our managers and find out more about career opportunities and benefits at Proctor.

Hospital Announces Foundation Appointment
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce the association of Laura L. Schoon of Pekin, IL, as Executive Director of the Proctor Health Care Foundation.
Schoon comes to Proctor from the Girl Scouts-Kickapoo Council where she was Fund Development Director from 2003-2007. From 1993-2003 she was President of Junior Achievement of Central Illinois, Inc.
She received her BA in Communication from the University of Illinois at Springfield, graduating Cum Laude, and is a member of the Rotary Club of Peoria-North and Women in Leadership.

Blaum Receives Certification
Sean Blaum, RRT has received RPFT (Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist) certification after recently passing the national board exam.
This credential is the highest diagnostic credential for respiratory therapists. Blaum joined Proctor in August 2003. He resides in Peoria and is a graduate of the ICC Respiratory Care Program.
According to the latest published statistics, only 115 therapists hold this credential in the state.

Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery will host
Home Box Office (HBO) Documentary Preview
On Wednesday, March 14, the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery at Proctor Hospital will provide a free 90-minute preview to a new HBO documentary called the Addiction Project. The preview will be held at the Hult Health Education Center on the Hospital campus at 5409 N. Knoxville Ave., from 6:00-8:00 p.m. There will be a Q&A session following the film.

The HBO series will be a groundbreaking 14-part series. The network will begin airing its 90-minute centerpiece to the series on Thursday, March 15. The series responds to a simple yet compelling question regarding addiction: “Why can’t they just stop”? In response, the Addiction Project addresses such key messages as: addiction is a brain disease; addiction is not a moral failure; drug and alcohol abuse generally begins in adolescence; genetic and environmental factors and treatment.
The preview at the Hult Health Education Center is free and open to the public.

Dean Receives February PEP Recognition
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce that Karen Dean, Case Manager, Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery, has received the Proctor Employee Personified Award for February, 2007. The Award is presented monthly to an employee who displays superior and outstanding behaviors.

Her work has been very helpful in evaluating policies and procedures.She is motivated to provide the highest quality care and service to both our internal and external customers. Atchley Receives Respiratory Certification
Proctor Hospital is please to announce that Nuiel Atchley, RRT, Respiratory Care Department, has received RPFT certification. The registered pulmonary function therapist certification is the highest diagnostic certification for respiratory therapists. Certification comes through the National Board for Respiratory Care. There are fewer than 115 therapists with this certifcation in the state of Illinois.
Atchley has been employed by Proctor since 1998 and resides in Canton with wife Wendy and their two children.

Unique Opportunity During February Red Cross Blood Drive
Proctor Hospital and the Peoria Medical Society Alliance invite you to celebrate Doctor's Day 2007 by donating blood in honor of your favorite doctor. On Thursday, February 8 Proctor Hospital will host an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. in Proctor Professional Building classrooms one and two. Lunch will be provided by Avanti’s from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. for donors scheduled during this time. Donors are eligible if they donated on or before December 14, 2006. Schedule appointments by calling Carrie McMillion at 689-8608. What better way to honor your favorite physician than to donate blood in his or her honor. At the Blood Drive, you may specify the doctor in whose honor you are donating. If you choose, a card can be sent to the selected physician to let him or her know of your donation.
Baker Accepts Executive Director Position
Proctor Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Todd Baker as Executive Director of Ambulatory Services, effective January 1, 2007. Baker is currently the General Manager for Proctor First Care and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the five facilities.
As Executive Director, Baker will provide leadership to the operational units of Belcrest Services, Ltd., Proctor Health Systems, as well as continued management of Proctor First Care.
Baker received his BS and his MBA from Bradley University, Peoria. He resides in West Peoria with wife Laurie, son Nick and daughter Caitlin.
